Just Like Us

This book could work well as the chosen title—one needn’t read the whole thing to get something out of it, and college students will relate to the girls and their friends.  Although I’ve always been very liberal about illegal immigrants, this book made me think about it differently—-beyond how I feel about having people being paid under the table to pick fruit or clean buildings.  There were a few parts that were especially compelling—the immigration game as described on page 254, the legislation on page 266 where it was revealed that Denver did not save money by cracking down on illegal immigrants, and the comment on page 299 that Americans want illegal immigrants when it’s convenient—when work is to be done, but not when it comes to providing education and other essential services.

Zeitoun is my first choice for the common read, but this is a close second.
